On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, Mount Vernon lost a piece of living history—a white oak tree dating to Washington’s time fell due to hign winds and overly saturated ground. The tree's trunk was approximately 46 inches in diameter and based on the tree rings was dated to around 1778. | In 2020 I obtained some of the wood from this historic tree and made this chess set. All the pieces and the boards squares are made with the wood. The dark pieces and dark squares were fumed with ammonia to obtain the dark color. |

I was asked to make a chess board for Mount Vernon to be paired with a donated hand-painted American Revolution Chess Set to be auctioned at George Washington's Birthnight Ball and Auction. The chess board is made with the wood of the 1778 white oak tree described above. 2023 |
